AMERICAN EAGLE SILVER COIN HISTORY
In 1986, the U.S. Mint started minting the American Eagle silver coin.  The American Eagle coin set, available in platinum, gold, or silver, was established as a way for the U.S. citizen to invest in precious metals, and thus, add an important component to a diversified portfolio. 

AMERICAN EAGLE SILVER COIN DESIGN
The obverse (heads) Silver Eagle is based on A.A. Weinman's "Walking Liberty" introduced in 1917 on the silver half-dollar.  The reverse (tails) has an eagle and shield, symbolizing American strength and pride.  Designed by United States Mint sculptor John Mercanti, it is comprised of a striking heraldic eagle with shield, and olive branch in the right talon and arrows in the left.

AMERICAN EAGLE SILVER COIN MINTAGE / POPULATION
The American Eagle Silver coin is minted in three types: Proof, Uncirculated, and Bullion. 
Proofs, considered collectibles, are minted on highly burnished blanks.  These collector coins typically sell at a multiple of the spot price of silver.
Uncirculated coins are relatively new.  The uncirculated coin is also on a burnished blank.  These coins sell between the proof and bullion price.
Bullion coins are sold through dealers.  The bullion coin is very close to the spot price of silver, plus a few percent for distribution and marketing.
